The Long Cutie follows our favorite little girl, "Savvy", who continues exploring her world as only a three-year-old can, as viewed through the eyes of her father. But get this It alternates between chapters about Savvy and chapters that tell the stories of other real life people who have Long QT Syndrome, a potentially life threatening heart condition. It's one chapter about Savvy, then a chapter about a different Long QT person, alternating back and forth through the audiobook. In between the chapters are fascinating vignettes from a Norwegian friend who tells stories about his family and their history of LQTS.

All the stories in the book are all about how each family found out that they had Long QT, how they deal with it, etc. Some of them consider themselves "special needs". Others don't. Some found out that they had Long QT by passing out and wrecking their cars! Some were misdiagnosed with epilepsy for years. Some of their stories are like reading TV medical drama. Some are like reading a comedy. All of them are true.

Think of it like Pulp Fiction without all the shooting and blood. And without the gangsters. And without the cussing. And... okay, don't think of it like Pulp Fiction. Wait, DO think of Pulp Fiction, but only in the way the stories are separate stories that are told in pieces that may or may not overlap.

You know, you'll just have to listen to it. But I think you're really going to like it!

The Long Cutie Savvy Stories Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Dan Alatorre Jake Marek Books

The Long QT is a heart condition. When you say it fast, it sounds like the Long Cutie, hence the book's title. The author's daughter has this condition. It can be frightening. It can be fatal. And many people are not diagnosed (or misdiagnosed) until it is too late.

The book is primarily about how the author's family deals with this condition while rasing their precocious daughter Savannah...Savvy for short. Ok, I can hear you now:

"OMG--not ANOTHER book where the author spins a tale of "woe is me, please feel sorry for me, look what we have to deal with, life is so unfair!"

Well if you were thinking this, you'd be wrong.

The author intersperses vignettes of his daughter's activities and daily life with stories of OTHER people who have battled Long QT. And by doing so, he does something that is extremely difficult: he educates you about the condition, without it being a dry, boring, medical report.

In fact, the book reads almost like a collection of short stories...they just are all about people with Long QT. And it takes a very talented author to make this happen.

I don't have Long QT. I guess that after a stent and Open Heart (quadruple bypass) surgery, God figured I didn't need that, too. I'm hoping you will never have to deal with Long QT. Even if everyone in your family is super healthy, I'd still recommend this book. It was very interesting and moved along quickly.

You can always tell when a book is well written...you find yourself sad that it has ended.

A note to the author: Dan, I keep my head down in the rain...but I wear glasses.

The Long Cutie Savvy Stories Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Dan Alatorre Jake Marek Books Reviews

The title to this book, THE LONG CUTIE, was of immediate interest. I figured it must be something to do with a child because of the cover, and something medical, also because of the cover. Was the child extra tall? But no, it’s not that at all. The words are the phonetic pronunciation of a medical condition called Long QT Syndrome. It’s a cause of sudden death in predominantly children and young adults and is caused by a fault in the heart’s electrical system.

Given that, you’d be forgiven for wondering whether you really want to subject yourself to reading a book about it but I’m happy to report that although it tugged at the emotions it was a good read.

It’s an uplifting and delightful diary of sorts; of a father’s day-to-day enjoyment of his life with his three year old daughter Savvy. That she has Long QT is by-the-by. That he has Long QT is by-the-by.

Interspersed with his stories of Savvy are contributing chapters from others around the world who live with Long QT. Some of the stories are funny, some heartrending, but all touch you.

The author’s laid back style makes it an easy, if emotional, read. I remember a news item last year about a 14 year old boy literally dropping dead after a football game and wondering how that could possibly happen. Now I know. At the end of the book the author invites those affected by Long QT Syndrome to join the Facebook group—you don’t have to suffer it alone.

An inspiring read.
The Long Cutie By Dan Alatorre
This story is about the diagnosis the authors get when their newborn is brought into the world. There are other stories by others who also suffer from the Long QT disease.
Love learning about new things and how they all work. This book also includes humor to get through the hard difficult times.
A link between the two comes out in this book.
After hearing the stories from the older crowd you realize how severe this disease really is and you wonder how many others you know with epilepsy actually have this. Such heartbreak but rewarding journeys.
Love the health community as they share what works for them and it might work for others, so caring and sharing.
I can relate to this story as I have a rare eye condition and have undergone so many tests over the years, not to help me but maybe to help others who are diagnosed with it. Hope is all you have some days. I do hope my results from the tests have helped others.
Such a compassionate book from everyone involved.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest review.

The Short Years 4th book will be out around Christmas
I bought it for the donations he made. It was ok. Not an exciting story and certainly not what I expected.
Long Cutie felt like it was a collection of short stories that shows how the daughter is ridden with a heart condition and the battle a family must go through to endure. It isn't a woe is me type of story; quite the contrary. This book has a mix of good family laughter that you got from the Savvy stories as well as the seriousness of the situation. This book was well written and helped educate its readers.
If there was ever a character that I wanted to reach inside a book and embrace, it is Savvy in The Long Cutie. Written from the point of view of a loving father, Savvy's story, as well as the others mentioned, will stay with you for some time and may even change your life. Being diagnosed with any form of illness is bad enough, but one that is severe, even reading about it, can be heartbreaking. This author balanced heartbreak with uplifting prose. Because of this, I'm walking away from this novel smiling instead of crying my eyes out.
The Long Cutie is a long book about a heart condition I had never heard of until this author shared his daughter’s diagnosis. It is 348 pages of entertaining, humorous prose intermingled with heart-touching, real-life scenarios. Dan Alatorre struck a perfect balance between educating the world about an underdiagnosed, potentially fatal medical condition and keeping the reader completely wrapped up in the emotional aspects of those who live with Long QT. I was fully engaged and invested from the first chapter to the last. Knowledge is power, and whether or not you suffer from Long QT or know someone who does, the information in this book has life-saving potential. I would encourage everyone to add The Long Cutie to their reading list.
