Good book.
great
I have read from 25 to 30 books on Polygamy. Maybe more. I know the history. I've read the history waaaay too many times. Seems like all the books take up too much time on the history. OK - we get it! This one doesn't do that. It's a very good read and one you might not be able to put down. I would recommend this book. It deals more with the guy's life than the history of polygamy. Yes, it does have some history but he keeps it to a minimum. Good book.
A heart felt story about how a young boy struggled to find his place in life. The controversy of religion and how it effected his decisions, his upbringing, his emotions, his trials, and ulimately - his adulthood.
When I started reading this story I found it hard to put down. I suppose I never though about how different religions can effect lives. The drastic contrast from one to another, sometimes, is mind boggling. Wondering how people honestly believe it is ok to raise children like this and whether those children actually ever really feel the love I experienced as a child.
Brian openly discloses how growing up in a poligamist envirement effected him and those close to him. The challenges of becoming a "number" in a family of many children. Fighting within yourself to discover ways to be noticed and special to get your parents attention. How is feels to live in a world hiding your beliefs, living lies, abuse, and in some ways, being neglected.

Brian opens up about his feelings about his father, and his thoughts and desire to kill his father. Facing his demons, and opening up to Jesus Christ, helped him find his way to the path he lives today, and find peace looking back at his past but not living it any longer.

He is a remarkable writer as well as a remarkable man.
Thanks Brian for sharing your story with us.
I have previously read several books written by ex-sister wives of the FLDS.

This was the first account I've read written by a male member and it provided a different perspective. The author was a 7th generation FLDS member so FLDS was nothing new to him but a way of life - *the* way of life.

Chapter 7 defines the FLDS root beliefs on achieving godhood which includes Jesus' and Lucifer's (his two oldest children) role in God's plan for salvation. This was very interesting. It was a concept that I had never heard of.

He says that in 1978 the mainstream LDS Church revoked part of the basic doctrine regarding black males in the priesthood. I do wonder what other history the LDS church has re-written. Another book for another time, I guess.
This book gives a very good basic description of the origins of the Mormon church and the rise of fundamental Mormon groups. I've read many similar books and actually grew up hearing many of the stories first hand. Although not very detailed (which is good, it's just laying the groundwork for the rest of the book), it is very accurate and easy to read.

Mackert does a good job of putting the reader in his shoes as he was growing up. The joys, the heartache, the fear, and the hopelessness all come across as genuine and aptly set up the later chapters.

It's a good story of overcoming a deeply engrained mindset and worldview to experience a more joyous life.
Illegitimate is the biography of one man who was one of the youngest children of 32. all living in the same house with his mother and 3 "sister" wives. The book begins with a session with a psychologist after he indicated he wanted to kill his father.

The author does an excellent job of weaving in and out of his life. the lives of his 32 siblings. and the shame felt because he had to hide his identity.

This book does a wonderful job of explaining the belief system of the FLDS from the man's perspective. In fact.I plan to keep the book on my shelf as a reference book. He includes the history. and both pro's and con's of living under this system.

Unfortuantely. in this family the father was sexually abusing his daughters. which led to disolving the entire family as he knew it. His story also includes how he became a Christian. and his story of how he feels it saved his life. and took away his need to kill his father.

For those who are interested in learning about this lifestyle. I cannot think of a better written book from the man's perspective.
